How is a Fireplace Installed? Step-by-Step Fireplace Assembly
Fireplace assembly is more than just placing the firebox. For a safe and efficient fireplace, the chimney, floor, insulation, air supply, and casing must be planned together. The fireplace installation steps followed by the Dodok Home assembly team are as follows:
Survey and measurement: The wall or center of the room where the fireplace will be placed is measured; the chimney route and ceiling-roof structure are examined. The choice of guillotine (lift-door), cast iron, or freestanding fireplace is finalized based on this survey.
Chimney inspection: If an existing chimney is present, its cross-section, height, and draft are checked. If there is no chimney, a new chimney line is planned using steel flue pipes.
Floor and fireproof insulation: The floor where the firebox will sit is prepared with non-combustible materials according to load-bearing capacity; a fireproof safety area of at least 50 cm in front of the door and 30 cm on the sides is left. The back wall and side surfaces are protected with insulation materials resistant to temperatures above 500°C.
Firebox placement: The fireplace insert is placed and leveled; the necessary gap is left between the insert and the casing for thermal expansion.
Chimney connection: The outlet of the firebox is connected to the flue pipe in a leak-proof manner, and all connection points are checked.
Air supply and hot air ducts: Fresh air intake required for combustion (150-200 mm diameter air intake pipe), ventilation grilles under the enclosure, and, if desired, hot air ducts to carry heat to other rooms are prepared.
Casing and decoration: The appearance of the fireplace is completed with stone, brick, marble, drywall (fireproof board), or ceramic cladding.
Initial firing and testing: The draft, glass, and lift mechanism are tested, and usage and maintenance information are explained during delivery.
Fireplace Construction: Firebox, Chimney, and Casing
Today, the most preferred method for building a fireplace is to install a ready-made fireplace insert on-site. Fireplaces with inserts provide higher efficiency compared to classic brick fireplaces, produce less soot and smoke, and are safer to use thanks to glass-door models.
Choosing a Fireplace Insert
The type of insert determines both the look and heating performance of the fireplace. Guillotine fireplaces with doors that slide up and down are popular in homes and villas, cast iron fireplaces for those wanting a classic look, and freestanding and suspended fireplaces stand out in cafes, restaurants, and large living rooms.
How to Build a Fireplace Chimney?
A well-functioning fireplace depends heavily on the chimney. The chimney cross-section must be at least 14x14 cm (at least 15 cm diameter for round chimneys) and should not be smaller than the firebox outlet diameter. The chimney route should be as short and straight as possible, should not narrow towards the top, and should have a minimal number of elbows. Ending the chimney flue at least 60 cm above the highest point of the roof prevents wind from blowing smoke back down. Stainless steel flue pipes and insulated chimney systems are preferred for both safety and draft efficiency.
Fireplace Casing: Stone, Brick, Marble, and Drywall
The casing is the decorative part of the fireplace. Natural stone and cultured stone are frequently used in rustic and country-style spaces, firebricks for a classic look, and marble and ceramics in modern interiors. When building a fireplace with drywall, only fireproof (heat-resistant) boards must be used, and insulation must be applied between the firebox and the casing. You can review the auxiliary products used in assembly on our fireplace installation materials page.
Brick Fireplace or Fireplace Insert?
In classic brick fireplace construction, the fire burns directly in an open hearth; most of the heat escapes through the chimney, and there is a high risk of smoke spilling into the room. In fireplaces with (glass-door) inserts, combustion occurs in a closed chamber. This allows for longer-lasting heating with less wood, prevents sparks from flying, and the fireplace can be used as an open fireplace by sliding up the guillotine glass when desired.
Points to Consider During Fireplace Installation
- Flammable materials such as curtains, furniture, and carpets should not be closer than 1.5 meters to the fireplace.
- There must be an expansion gap and fireproof insulation between the insert and the casing.
- Sufficient fresh air intake must be provided to the room; air supply must be planned, especially in homes with insulation and airtight windows.
- Chimney connections must be leak-proof, and the chimney should be cleaned at least twice a year by an authorized chimney sweep.
- For the first approximately 2 weeks, the fireplace should be burned with small amounts of wood and low fire; this allows the casing mortar to dry.
- Only well-dried hardwood such as oak, hornbeam, or beech with a moisture content of 12-20% should be burned.
- A fireplace fire should never be extinguished with water.
- It is recommended to use a carbon monoxide detector in the room where the fireplace is located.
Fireplace Construction Cost and Installation Prices
Fireplace construction costs vary based on the selected insert model, dimensions, number of glass sides (single-sided, L-type, U-type, corner), chimney condition, casing material, and the city where the installation will take place. While installation is faster in a home with an existing chimney, labor and material costs increase for projects requiring a new chimney to be built from scratch. Frequently Asked Questions About Fireplace Installation
How long does fireplace installation take?
The duration varies depending on the chimney condition, fireplace type, and casing design. Firebox installation and chimney connection are generally completed in a short time, while decorative work like stone or marble cladding may require additional time depending on the design.
Can a fireplace be built in a house without a chimney?
Yes. For wood-burning fireplaces, a new chimney line can be created from the exterior facade or through the roof using steel flue pipes. In spaces where a chimney cannot be built, electric or bioethanol fireplaces can be preferred.
In which cities do you perform fireplace installation?
Dodok Home provides fireplace assembly and installation services throughout Turkey. You can contact us for planning based on your city.
Can I convert my existing fireplace into a fireplace with an insert?
Most classic brick fireplaces can be made more efficient and safer by placing a fireplace insert inside if the dimensions are suitable. For this, hearth dimensions and the chimney must be checked during the survey.
